The opioid crisis has been ravaging this country since 2011 and taking many family members way too soon. This book was born due to the lack of literature to address this very prevalent topic with the child population. Dad Got Out of Rehab is a story of what recovery from substance abuse looks like and the importance of family involvement on that journey. Family therapy is a crucial component of treatment of substance abuse and a key indicator of success. Psychoeducation and awareness of this issue must occur if children are involved so that they can break the generational cycle of substance abuse. Dad Got Out of Rehab is the first step in allowing for this opportunity to happen.

I am glad this book exists! I think it is so important to have content like this for young readers and through young adult readers. Rehab is something that a lot of people go through and I loved seeing this book share so many wonderful and demystifying details about the why’s and how’s about what rehab is about. Understanding that will be a conversation longer than one picture book, but this is a phenomenal resource to begin that conversation with and to look back on when needed. I loved the clarity and normalization this book shares, it de=stigmatizes without being overly simple or careless with the word choices, and portrays love and encouragement in the supportive pictures. The format is definitely a children’s picture book but it looks very well designed and formatted in that genre. I would love to see more in a series like this about subjects that people and kids wonder about, need to know about, and often are not informed about at all. This helps take the shame and stigmas away from the concept and act of going to rehab and shows a great loving success story that made me feel good to read. I was so happy to read this book.

In a few explanatory sentences, please share with the entrant 1-3 of the most important aspects that need to be improved for this book to be more appealing/useful to readers and why.

I don’t think this is a book for middle grade and young adults primarily. While those age groups would definitely benefit from the content and understanding this book gives, as well as the information, it is formatted as a picture book and should be in the genre of young readers. Perhaps that is just an error here, but the book is at the right level of concept and explanation that elementary school age kids can understand and handle. I think that it should be in the young readers and picture book genres to find a lot more readers and a great audience that might be looking for exactly this type of story to help explain difficult and complex concepts, open discussions of healing and acceptance, and just start learning more about things that are quite normal though often ignored by a majority of society.
