Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that is both a psychological and medical condition. It involves restrictive eating that causes extreme weight loss because the person has a distorted reality of how his or her body looks. This altered perception of one’s body compels the person to continue not to eat despite health complications from the eating disorder. Many things contribute to anorexia such as past trauma, low self-esteem, societal pressure to lose weight, and toxic stress. Carrie, the Photographer tells the story of a young Latina girl who suffers with anorexia. In this story, Carrie struggles with how she sees herself but with professional help and the support of her friends, she comes to see herself the way others see her. It is a story of friendship, learning to love oneself, and helping others discover their own inner beauty.     Carrie, the Photographer is not just a story, it is a great way to start a conversation with children about body image. A negative body image can lead to many self-destructive behaviors; conversations and modeling healthy behaviors can make a big difference.

    There are many great lessons that you can take away from Carrie, the Photographer. It helps us remember the need to model healthy behaviors. It lets us know that good support is the key to our success. It teaches us to accept our differences and to focus on what makes us special. Lastly, it shows us that our idea of success will change as our self-worth and self-awareness improves!

    Another hit from author, Kira Parris-Moore! While we all know that a healthy body begins with a healthy mind, remembering this day in and day out is a challenge, especially when the majority of what we see and hear in our culture presents an image of unattainable standards for just about everyone. The pressures one feels to achieve these standards can (and more often does) wreak havoc on our mental health regardless of creed or gender.

    As with her other titles, Parris-Moore used her unique and special ability to highlight these challenges in a gentle yet engaging way – no easy feat when it comes to the space of mental health and children’s books. Yet, she’s able to navigate this space with ease with this cautionary tale that ends with a beautiful message of loving oneself, the power of supporting others and that asking for help and committing to embracing it is not only necessary but can be life changing. Highly recommend for both older children and the parents or caregiver reading it with them.
